ACI Field Technicians: How sampling requirements of ASTM C94 can save your project and budget

According to ASTM C94/C94M-21b, the standard specification for ready-mixed concrete, sampling is the process of obtaining a representative portion of the fresh concrete delivered to the project site. The sample is then used to perform various tests, such as slump, air content, temperature, and compressive strength, to verify that the concrete meets the specified requirements.

However, sampling is not as simple as it may seem. There are many factors that can affect the representativeness and reliability of the sample, such as the method, frequency, location, and timing of sampling, as well as the equipment, personnel, and procedures involved. If the sampling is not done properly, the test results may not reflect the true characteristics of the concrete, leading to potential problems such as:

- Non-compliance with the contract specifications and code requirements

- Rejection or acceptance of substandard or defective concrete

- Disputes or claims between the parties involved in the project

- Delays or rework in the construction schedule

- Increased costs and risks for the project

- Reduced durability and service life of the concrete structure

To avoid these issues, it is essential that the sampling is performed by qualified and trained personnel who follow the standard practices and guidelines. This is where ACI Field Technicians come in.

ACI Field Technicians are individuals who have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete, as defined by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). They are certified by ACI after passing both a written and a performance examination, which cover the following ASTM test methods and practices:

- C1064/C1064M – 17—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete

- C172/C172M – 17—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete

- C143/C143M – 15a—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete

- C138/C138M – 17a—Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete

- C231/C231M – 17a—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method

- C173/C173M – 16—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method

- C31/C31M – 19—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
